Commitment to Achieving Net Zero

Green Lemon Company is committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline year: 2021

  • Total footprint equates to 1.84 tonnes CO₂e per employee in 2021

  • UK average footprint per person: 12.7 tonnes CO₂e per year

  • Average footprint per employee in a tech company: ~3.5–5.5 tonnes CO₂e per year

  • GHG Intensity Ratio of 0.03

GHG intensity ratio is an industry-standard normalisation metric used to track emissions relative to revenue over time.

Deeper dive: Remote Working Approach

We wanted more information on our remote working methodology, so we can understand one of the largest contributors to our footprint.

Working from home uses additional electricity (charging laptops and powering external monitors) and heating compared to homes being empty during working hours.

To calculate the impact of employee home-working, we first estimate the additional electricity used. This additional electricity comes from laptops, lighting and monitors.

We have estimated the hours that the Green Lemon Company team worked from home using data collected through the employee survey.

Calculation Basis

Total home office usage (kWh)

= 150 watts × number of employees working from home × working hours per month

Energy and emissions calculation methodology (remote working)

Energy use is translated into CO₂e emissions using recognised conversion factors. We take into account the prevalence of renewable electricity providers within the team and their geographical distribution, using national grid intensity factors. In the UK, this factor is set by BEIS at 0.212 kg CO₂e per kWh.

We then calculate the impact of the additional energy required to heat employees’ homes during working hours. An average gas boiler uses 0.5 kW to heat a home. Information from the employee survey is used to calculate the total number of hours of additional heating required.

Total heating usage (kWh)

= 0.5 kW × total number of hours employees had heating on while working from home

Lastly, additional heating energy use is translated into CO₂e emissions using the BEIS natural gas conversion factor of 0.184.

Work from home gas emissions (kg CO₂e)

 = Total heating usage (kWh) × 0.184

Emissions Reduction Targets

In order to continue our progress to achieving net zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 20 tCO2e by 2030. This is a reduction of 20%.

Carbon Reduction Projects

Completed carbon reduction initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2021 baseline. The carbon emission reduction achieved by these schemes equate to 2 tCO2e, a 7.5% reduction against the 2021 baseline and the measures will be in effect when performing the contract.

This was achieved by reducing server calls in our system builds and by reducing business travel.

Future carbon reduction initiatives

In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:

  • Engaging suppliers in our CRP mission.

  • Offering more practical solutions for home energy use

  • Education and awareness

Declaration and Sign Off

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed in accordance with PPN 006 and associated guidance and reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans.

Emissions have been reported and recorded in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard and uses the appropriate government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting.

Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported in accordance with SECR requirements (where required), and the required subset of Scope 3 emissions have been reported in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard. This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and signed off by the board of directors.
